Dr David Carey

BSc MBBS FRACP (University Medal medicine UNSW) Endocrinologist

Dr Carey has been involved in clinical research and treatment of obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, PCOS and osteoporosis since 1990. He has authored national and international publications.

He graduated in both Science and Medicine at the University of New South Wales, winning the University Medal in Medicine. Later postgraduate study through UNSW gave him the opportunity to undertake research in two of Sydney's most respected hospitals.

Moving to Brisbane in 1996, Dr Carey took a post as senior lecturer and then acting director of the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology at Princess Alexandra Hospital, prior to his move to the Wesley Hospital and appointment as Associate Professor at UQ. In 2006, he established the Brisbane Metabolic Institute, specialising in the treatment and management of metabolic syndrome, diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis.

Dr Carey has a strong interest in the research and development of medications and programs that promote weight loss and cure diabetes. He also provides teaching services on the topics of obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

Steve Nichols

Exercise Physiologist

Steve graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Clinical Exercise Physiology from the University of Queensland.

He has been an enthusiastic and energetic member of the clinic since June 2012. Steve sees patients at our clinic on Monday mornings and all day Tuesday.

Suzanna is an accredited practising dietitian who brings to the clinic a passion for providing patients with realistic solutions in simple words. She has developed a breadth of experience and understanding in order to provide nutritional guidance to patients with a range of health concerns including diabetes, weight loss, food intolerances and digestive issues. Suzanna is passionate about education and has designed and now leads our group nutrition sessions at the clinic.

Our clinic works closely with other local specialists, allowing our patients to get preferential treatment for offsite testing.

Podiatrist

We work in partnership with podiatrists within the CBD and throughout Brisbane to ensure you get the best care at the greatest convenience.  

Diagnostic Imaging for Women

Dr Carey has developed a specific CT scan in partnership with Diagnostic Imaging in Astor Terrace. These specialised scans give a clear indication of the breakdown of fat types in your body. Please note that since this particular scan has been organised with custom specifications, patients requiring a CT scan must attend the Astor Terrace lab.

EyeQ Optometry

Located directly beside our building, EyeQ Optometry provide valuable services in monitoring the optical health of our diabetic patients. Patients may be referred for retinal photography.

Pathology Collection & Analysis

Patients may be referred for blood or urine testing at Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology. You are able to take your referral to any SNP or QML pathology collection centre at your convenience. These services are billed to Medicare with no out-of-pocket expense.

Mental Health Care

We can recommend local psychiatric and psychology services in Spring Hill when required.
