Dr David Carey
BSc MBBS FRACP (University Medal medicine UNSW)
Endocrinologist
Medical Director of
Health+ Services and the Brisbane Metabolic Research institute
I have been involved in clinical research and treatment of obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, PCOS and osteoporosis since 1990. I have both national and international publications and present at conferences world wide.
I graduated in both Science and Medicine at the UNSW and won the University Medal in Medicine.
I moved to Brisbane in 1996 and was acting director of the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology at PAH, prior to my move to the Wesley Hospital and appointment as associate professor in Endocrinology, UQ. I established the Brisbane Metabolic institute at the end of 2006. I specialise in the treatment and management of metabolic syndrome, diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis and have an interest in R&D of drugs and programs to promote weight loss. I have provided teaching services, covering the topics of osteoporosis and obesity for the science and medical students at the University of Qld.
I run an endocrine private practice, which has now been incorporated into the HEALTH+ Specialist services centre which has a multi-disciplinary approach to treating the metabolic syndrome. The HEALTH+DIABETES and HEALTH+WEIGHT LOSS CENTRE runs inpatient and outpatient diabetes and obesity treatment programs. Our team consists of exercise physiologists, psychologists, nurse counselors, diabetes educators and dieticians. We work closely with sports physicians, cardiologists, psychiatrists and lymphoedema specialists, sleep specialists and bariatric surgeons.
Current research includes clinical trials of oral growth hormone, Reductil, GLP-1 and cannabis receptors blockers (rimonabant) for treatment of obesity and diabetes.
